Course structure and certification

An ADR Training Course (also called an ADR Course or training course) includes defined course content, written ADR exams, and a practical assessment.
Successful candidates receive an ADR training certificate recognised across ADR member states.

An approved Training Provider delivers training and may align with a Vocational Training Certificate framework. In the UK, qualifications may be provided by bodies such as Qualifications Scotland.

What Are the ADR Refresher Training Requirements?

ADR refresher training is required to renew an ADR certificate before expiry to maintain legal authorisation for transporting dangerous goods by road.
Under ADR Regulations, an ADR qualification remains valid for five years. Drivers must complete ADR refresher training and pass the ADR exam within the final 12 months of the certificate’s validity period.

Refresher training confirms continued professional competence, updates drivers on current ADR Classes, revised safety rules, emergency procedures, and regulatory changes affecting ADR carriage.
Failure to complete refresher training before expiry removes legal authority to transport dangerous goods until requalification occurs.

Key requirements at a glance:

  • ADR certificate validity: 5 years

  • Refresher window: Final 12 months before expiry

  • Assessment: Mandatory ADR exam

  • Outcome: Renewed ADR certification with no lapse
